yellow flat periwinkle shells

Lots of new seashell necklaces in my shop, inspired by the sunshine we have at the moment. I love shells, and avoid buying shells online that may have been mass harvested which damages eco systems. Instead I go out and find my shells myself, collected in small batches and I always check no one is home before I take a shell.

Inspired by long hippy boho styles and friendship bracelets and tribal jewellery.

What looks like coral is actually a type of seaweed called maerl. Its a coralline algae which forms a hard outer skeleton due to the lime in its cell walls that produces the branched coral like fronds. Its an important part of the eco system and provides a habitat for many oceanic dwellers, even the ground up pieces make special beds for sea cucumbers and urchins to burrow into and nest. Its bright pink when its alive but turns white when it dies and is bleached by the sun.
