Journal: Seal Morning
Last September I went to visit Scotland and one of my favourite parts of my holiday was observing all the wonderful grey seals, prevalent in abundant numbers. In fact 40% of the world’s grey seal population live in UK waters, and 90% of them are found in Scotland. They are my favourite of all the sea mammals, dogs of the sea, and I was transfixed and bemused by the hilarious shapes and positions they lie in on what looks like very uncomfortable rock! They contort and flail their bodies, tails in the air, or strike a pose leaning back on their blubber. I wanted to create a series of paintings based on these strange postures, and there is no better animal that strikes a pose better than a cormorant drying its wings so I had to paint him too!
They are available in my shop now… while stocks last.
